• Nintendo DSi Launch

I hope you guys realize that DSi is only in Japan until late next year right?
You'll have all the time to play Guitar Hero On Tour/Decades, Tony Hawk's Motion, and any other Slot 2-based games.
But even then, they'll still be putting the DS Lite on the shelves next to the DSi as long as there's still demand for it next year.

Anyway, people are waiting in line for one in Japan right now!

Image

So far, they said they've been testing all types of SD cards.
Current flash cards of all kinds no longer work.
There's also a firmware update that you can get right on the spot.

Also! They've just announced a brand new Art Style series for DSi.
You know how much I love Art Style ~<3

• Wii News & Updates 2008.10.27

Here are this week's releases.

WiiWare

Strong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older - Alcohol Reference, Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,000 Wii Points): Rock and roll! Hurting for cash, Strong Bad sets out to dominate the “Battle Royale of the Bands.” Can he rule the stage and win the big prize? Or will he be drowned out by the competition? Find out in this high-voltage episode.

Art Style: ROTOHEX™ (Nintendo, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Use colored triangular panels to create a vibrant mosaic of stained glass in Art Style: ROTOHEX. As triangles fall from the top of the screen, rotate them to group six panels of the same color and create a matching hexagon, or HEX. Once the HEX has been formed, it will disappear, allowing the existing panels to shift and more panels to fill the playing field. A clear-cut goal and two different styles of intuitive controls allow you to focus solely on the game play-which is vital, as the playing field will be full of panels before you know it. With multiple modes (unlock more as you progress further in SOLO mode), special item panels at your disposal, and the ability to play cooperatively or competitively with a friend, there will always be another HEX to create.

Earthworm Jim (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Jim was an ordinary earthworm who did very earthworm-like things, such as flee from crows and eat dirt. One day, during an outer space fight, a suit drops to Earth and falls around Jim. It mutates him into a large and intelligent (at least by earthworm standards) superhero. Play as Jim in this Sega Genesis classic. When Jim learns of the evil plans of Psy-Crow and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, he decides to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name. Run, gun, swing on hooks by your head and launch cows at the interesting characters you meet along the way, such as Major Mucus, Chuck and Fifi, Evil the Cat, and Bob the Killer Goldfish.

There are already some reviews available. Do read them below and enjoying the videos.

System: Wii
No. of players: up to 4 players
Release Date: Oct 20, 2008
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Genre: Music
ESRB Rating: E
Overview (Excerpt):

• It’s easy to play improv jams. Musicians in your band jam by simply playing their instruments to the beat of a song or by improvising to their heart’s content. Play faster. Play slower. Skip a beat, or throw in 10 more. No matter what you do, Wii Music automatically transforms your improv stylings into great music. There are no mistakes—just playing for the pure joy of playing.

• Send your band-jam recordings to Wii Friends who have Wii Music. They’ll see your Mii™ band members, your players’ improv styles and your instrument selections. They can watch your recordings, or play over parts of your song, then send their modified recording back to you. Improv jams can be sent back and forth over WiiConnect24 and changed again and again.

The Joy Of Playing Music, For All

Wii Music is like a unique tool that lets you experience more than 60 musical instruments by simply using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. You don't need to be able to read musical scores or use complicated techniques to play the music.

"Why shouldn't people who like music, but find playing instruments difficult, be able to perform music just by letting their feelings take control and simply waving the controller and pushing a few buttons to the rhythm?" With this goal in mind, we created Wii Music, which is not quite a game and not quite an instrument. I hope that as you play, you will truly understand the joy of performing and develop a greater passion for music!

Please feel free to use Wii Music any way you want, such as developing a full band performance on your own or playing along with your family and friends!

~ Shigeru Miyamoto, General Producer

So there you have it, straight from the man himself. Words could not express it enough. Music is a way of expression.
You won't be able to feel it unless you have an open mind and lose yourself in the play.
..How would you express yourself? I will leave that up to you - the player.

• Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes

Image
Image Image Image

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes (タツノコ VS. CAPCOM CROSS GENERATION OF HEROES) is an upcoming crossover fighting game featuring characters from the Japanese animation studio Tatsunoko Production and video game company Capcom. Capcom has stated that the game will "probably not" be released outside of Japan due to licensing issues.

But we can still feast our eyes on some of the videos uploaded on GameTrailers and YouTube.
Here's the latest one, JAMMA Show Trailer:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41713.html

You'll see that they've now introduced Otoha from the Karas anime, PTX-40A from Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Morrigan from the Night Warriors (Darkstalkers) series, and so on..

Here's the official Japanese trailer from last week which introduced new characters such as Batsu from Legion of Heroes (Rival Schools), Souki from Dawn of Dreams, Doronjo from Yatterman, Rock Volnutt (Mega Man Volnutt) from Rockman DASH (Mega Man Legends):
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40897.html

HD video of some gameplay footage taken at Tokyo Game Show 2008 titled, "Rumble":
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41086.html

A couple more from TGS 2008:
http://media.wii.ign.com/media/142/14281713/vids_1.html

Finally, here's the infamous first original Japanese promotional trailer from a few months back in the summer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XmvnCzzS-c&fmt=18

It introduced characters such as Gatchaman, Casshern, Tekkaman from Tatsunoko studio, along with of course Ryu, Chun Li, Batsu, Morrigan from Capcom.

Japanese gamers are going buck-wild over Tatsunoko vs. Capcom [Wii]. Most presumably, It deserves as much attention as Super Smash Bros. Brawl [Wii].
This is yet another one of those crazy hardcore 2D fighting games that will not be available anywhere else but the Japanese arcades and Japanese Wii system.
The Wii version features new elements, including the option for simplified Wiimote-based controls (also supports full controls via the Classic Controller), special mini-games (including four-player bonus modes), and an original character, Hakushon Daimaou the genie, as a Wii exclusive.

Release date:
December 11, 2008 (Japan)

• Mega Man x Wario: The Return of 2D

I admire Capcom and Nintendo. They've been making the best games for all these years and haven't lost a single touch. With the success of their new games, I become accustomed to playing and enjoying them to the fullest.

Even though Wario Land: Shake It! got overshadowed by Mega Man 9, I support both equally as the returning age of old school 2D games.
Wario Land took 2D to a new level similar to what Super Paper Mario did.
Mega Man 9 took it much further by going 8-bit.
This game has set a new landmark and paving the way for other classic franchises to make their comeback return in retro style. I'm talking games like Castlevania, Sonic The Hedgehog, Contra, Bionic Commando, etc.
It's not necessary that these games are to go 8-bit/16-bit but to go to a form where they once shined their brightest. And only Mega Man can do it best.
In fact, it's ground-breaking for its time - in the world of High Definition 3D graphics.

Mega Man 9 is built for nothing short of perfection. And to have played this on a Nintendo system on Day 1 release, everything just felt so right for once.

And because of that, I've become as much of a fan as anyone else.
Here are some photos of some things I bought in hype of the game.

Leaping 8-Bit Mega Man T-Shirt:

I also have my Mega Man 9 Original Soundtrack CD:

As you might see, I too am a fan of everything 8-Bit and its underground music scene/culture.
My favorite track from the soundtrack is the Magma Man Stage theme, "Magma Burning".

At last, here's a piece of art work I made prior to the release of Mega Man 9 [WiiWare] and Wario Land: Shake It! [Wii].
It's a concept I've been thinking of for a few months.
A joint-project between two of the best game companies, Capcom and Nintendo.
I present to you, Mega Man x Wario wallpaper.

• Dead Space

Image

Dead Space is a 2008 comic book prequel to the video game of the same name. It is published by Image Comics and is written by Antony Johnston (who also wrote the game's dialogue), with art by Ben Templesmith. An animated version of it (really just the comic's images with the text replaced by a voice cast) was available to download via Xbox Live, PSN and various game review sites such as Gametrailers.com in summer 2008.

Trailer to Dead Space: Downfall, an animated film soon to release on DVD, Bluray on *October 28th:

Here's an Exclusive Sci vs. Fi TV Special on Dead Space (as featured on Sci-Fi Channel this month):

Learn more about Dead Space at the official websites:
http://www.deadspacegame.com
http://www.noknownsurvivors.com
http://www.deadspacethemovie.com

I'd like to say that I'm a fan of Survival Horrors (incl. Resident Evil the early series, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Eternal Darkness, SIREN, Penumbra..).
I love scary/Horror Flicks of all kinds just as much as horror games.

Dead Space is still on my wish list along with Silent Hill: Homecoming.
I'm looking forward to both of these for PC soon.

WiiWare

Art Style: CUBELLO (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Art Style: CUBELLO mixes the strategy and feel of a traditional puzzle game with the precision and reflexes required in a shooter. As each stage begins, various colored cubes form into one large object called a Cubello, which floats and rotates as you play. Launch additional cubes from your magazine and try to connect four or more of the same color, removing them from the Cubello and eventually leaving only its core. Take on the challenge of either Stage or Endless mode and watch what happens when Bonus Time is activated. The straightforward controls and goal ensure that anyone can play, while offering enough depth that even advanced players will find themselves quickly addicted to the unique world of Art Style: CUBELLO.

CUBELLO is the second installment to the Art Style series. This game is based on another game titled Coloris, part of the bit Generations series.

Here's my game footage of the game including Tutorial and the first two stages:

I'm lovin' every bit of this game. Reminds me of the time I was addicted to Tetrisphere [N64].

World of Goo (2D Boy, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 1,500 Wii Points): World of Goo is an award-winning, physics-based puzzle/construction game made entirely by two guys. Grab living, squirming, talking globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins and giant tongues. The millions of Goo Balls that live in the beautiful World of Goo are curious to explore—but they don’t know that they are in a game, or that they are extremely delicious. World of Goo Corporation is contractually obligated to state that everyone is a winner, and is enthusiastic to celebrate everyone’s Goo building opportunities equally.

SECRET OF MANA (Super NES™, 1-3 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older—Mild Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 800 Wii Points): Good and evil battle for a young warrior’s heart. There is one force in the universe that keeps good and evil in perfect balance. It is called the tree of Mana. But a magic sword has tricked a young warrior into upsetting this balance, spreading evil throughout the land. Thus, the warrior must undertake a dangerous journey to find the seeds of the Mana tree, which have been hidden for centuries. Only then can perfect harmony be restored. In this incredible adventure, things are not as they seem. Magic swords release evil as well as fight it. Treasure chests hold booby traps. Monsters are friends and friends are enemies. Potions give power, black magic takes it away. Dragons fly, weapons change. It’s a world turned upside down that you must help the warrior make right. And the only way to succeed is to solve the Secret of Mana.

STREET FIGHTER II’: SPECIAL CHAMPION EDITION (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen—Violence, 800 Wii Points): STREET FIGHTER II’: SPECIAL CHAMPION EDITION was the first STREET FIGHTER game released for the Sega Genesis console. The STREET FIGHTER series can be considered one of the first fighting games to popularize competitive video game fighting. This version of the game contains both the CHAMPION and HYPER rule sets, from the two editions released in the arcades. It also introduced an exclusive Group Battle mode that is now a general feature in most fighting games. Play as one of 12 different characters, each with their own distinctive fighting style. Try single-player mode or challenge a friend in this legendary, classic fighting game.

• Cave Story

Based on the successful 2004 freeware indie video game for PC under the same name, Cave Story (Japanese title, Doukutsu Monogatari) will be making its appearance in new form as a WiiWare title in early 2009. According to 1UP it has been said to be "so massive that it rivals modern GBA Castlevania and Metroid games in terms of scope and play time." The WiiWare version will be developed by Nicalis with producer Tyrone Rodriguez. It will have "new, exclusive content and features" including widescreen and 480p display options, and new character designs by the original artist, Daisuke Amaya (also known as art-name, Pixel). The game will feature new graphics and music created for the game, but players will be able to switch them for the original music and visuals.

Excerpt:
The once-carefree world is in danger of disaster at the hands of a new threat. The Mimigas' (rabbit-like creatures) only hope is in the hands of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name. Players take control of the main character and learn the origins of the island's power.

Proto Man Mode (200pts) - Play the game as Proto Man. Some of Proto Man’s abilities may differ from Mega Man’s. Proto Man has the Charge Shot ability, Power Slide ability, and a shield that he can utilize to deflect bullets at enemies. However, Proto Man also takes double damage and has double bounce back when he is hit.
There is no story for Proto Man and he is not compatible with Rankings or Challenges.
Both DLC packs are available now on WiiWare Channel today (October 6th, 2008) with XBLA following on October 7th, and PSN releasing October 9th.

Mario Golf™ (Nintendo 64™, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Mario™ takes a well-deserved break from his role as the Mushroom Kingdom’s busiest hero and returns to the links for some world-class golfing action. Since no one likes to hit the fairways alone, he’s brought along a group of friends—both familiar characters and brand new ones. Choose from 10 different modes of play and six 18-hole courses in a variety of environments for a golfing experience with endless replay value. Add in fun, colorful graphics with a Mario touch (a Boo indicates wind direction), intuitive controls, incredibly deep game play and multiplayer support (taunt your opponents), and you have a game anyone will enjoy—even if you’ve never played a round of golf. Shining Force™ II (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): It’s a dark and stormy night in the kingdom of Granseal when a thief steals two jewels from the Tower of the Ancients. He sets in motion strange events that lead to the resurrection of Zeon, the Devil King. Granseal’s king falls sick, the princess is kidnapped, and a door to Arc Valley, the Devil King’s home, is opened. The young swordsman, Bowie, realizing the grave danger Granseal faces, must lead the Shining Force to find the Holy Sword and the stolen jewels, and protect Granseal against the invading armies of Zeon.

• My Nintendo DSi

Here's something I made right before they officially revealed the new model:

Image
click for specs

I wanted to surprise people but I only had a couple of hours yesterday before the conference started.
Tell ya what, I was pretty darn close!
Yet, the official model does meet a lot of expectations.
I'm still not too keen on the new path that this DSi is going though.
But now I realized the official model does make sense:
2 LCD screens call for 2 cameras..

I may have to re-edit my design even further to fit my liking.
