• Call of Duty: World at War

Image

Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2. The story focuses on the final battles of World War II in the Pacific and Eastern Europe involving the United States, the Empire of Japan, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany. It is told from the perspectives of a Marine Raider and a Red Army soldier, and is based on several historical battles, including the Makin Island raid, the Battle of Peleliu, and the Battle of Berlin.

Developers: Treyarch, n-Space (Nintendo DS), Rebellion (PlayStation 2)
Publisher: Activision
Genre: First-person shooter
Mode: Single-player, multiplayer, co-op
Rating: ESRB: M, BBFC: 15, OFLC: MA15+
Release dates:
NA November 11, 2008
EU November 14, 2008
AUS November 12, 2008

Gameplay
World at War is based on the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine and will feature a more mature theme than previous installments in the series. Swimming will be introduced to the series. While in water, the player cannot sprint and will only move at half speed. Flamethrowers, introduced in Call of Duty: United Offensive, will appear alongside flammable environments. Vehicles (i.e. Tanks) will also be reintroduced in this edition of Call of Duty. The game will be more open-ended than previous games in the series, as there will be multiple ways to complete objectives.

Here's a gameplay footage of part 1 in campaign:

Features
World at War will have cooperative gameplay with up to two players via split screen on consoles, or four players online, for the first time in the franchise. In addition, the Wii version will also feature splitscreen multiplayer. All console versions of the game will use a perk system similar to that in Call of Duty 4. Activision has also confirmed that vehicles will be usable in multiplayer. Six multiplayer modes have been announced including team deathmatch and capture the flag, among others.

A special online co-op mode involving Nazi zombies is unlocked once the player completes the single player campaign. In it, up to four players must attempt to defend themselves from limitless waves of undead Nazi soldiers. With each kill and successful hit, players earn points that can be used to purchase weapons and fortifications to further defend themselves.
That sounds a lot like Left 4 Dead. \:D/

New Theaters of Operation: Players fight as U.S. Marines and Russian soldiers facing enemies that employ lethal new tactics and know no fear, or no mercy. Epic conflicts are fought on multiple fronts, playing through the climactic battles of WWII in the grittiest, most chaotic and cinematically intense experience to date.

Wii Zapper Support: Call of Duty: World at War fully supports Nintendo's innovative and unique Zapper controller through a customized game setting that allows the entire game, including multi-player, to be played with the Zapper. This customized setting adds a new way to play by incorporating unique gestures and button layouts that add to the Call of Duty experience.

Squadmate Mode: This single-screen cooperative mode lets players team up to play alongside friends and family. At any moment, a second Wii Remote can be activated, giving the second player their own aiming crosshair to provide cover and added firepower while fighting alongside their Squadmate.

Combat-Look: Includes “Combat-Look” technology – as the player runs through the game's diverse environments and topographies, the vertical line of sight discreetly adapts to keep players focused on the battlefield without having to radically adjust for uphill/downhill grade variations in the terrain. This system still allows complete freedom and mobility for targeting and results in a smoother and more playable Wii experience than ever before.

Advertising agency Leo Burnett sent word today that they won the Grand Effie at the 40th Annual Effie Awards for their "Wii Would Like to Play" marketing campaign. The campaign won for being the “most effective” marketing effort.

"The ‘Wii Would Like to Play’ campaign chose not to embrace an obvious strategy, namely fawning over the prized teenage male gamer. Instead, Wii targeted his mom, dad and grandmother. While the competition catered to a narrow audience, Wii invited everyone to play. As a result, the Wii has been sold out nationwide since the launch and ignited a cultural phenomenon in how people experience video games," Effie organizers said.

AudiOdyssey is an experimental computer game designed to be accessible to both the visually impaired community and mainstream gamers. The user stars as Vinyl Scorcher, an up-and-coming DJ, on his quest to get club patrons dancing. Swinging the Nintendo Wii controller to the beat, Vinyl lays down the various component tracks of a song, and keeps the party jumping. If he does an especially good job, he can even freestyle! But beware - if dancers get too rowdy, they’re likely to bump into the turntables, messing up Vinyl’s tracks. Think you have what it takes?

AudiOdyssey was developed with four research goals:
* The visually-impaired and the sighted can enjoy the same level and quality of gameplay
* Navigate game’s menus with ease and efficiency approaching that of conventional UIs
* Create a fun and natural control scheme using the Wiimote
* An engaging game that relies more on high quality audio than visuals

The first details on Call of Duty 5: World at War have been revealed by a UK magazine called gamesTM. The issue which was published today claims that the game is going to be grittier, have scarier enemies with new tactics and contain co-op modes.

"There will be co-op for the first time in a Call of Duty. Also there will be vehicles and squad-based elements to the multiplayer. Formats: PC, PS3, 360 and Wii. The Wii version is being worked on by a separate team within Treyarch. (The mag) reckons it’ll be a much closer comparison between the next-gen and Wii versions than any other Wii game on the market."

"Jeez, they have the CoD4 engine running on the Wii apparently. They are using (the CoD4 engine) for all the next-gen ones too. The Wii Zapper will be supported."
